STATEN ISLAND, NY – The Small Businesses of Castleton Avenue – the charming storefronts that give Staten Island its undeniable small-town feel – will be featured by talented North Shore artist Wendy Beth Jackelow at the upcoming Castleton Avenue Art Show and Merchant Stroll on September 7th. 19 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
The West Brighton artist has compiled paintings that showcase the area’s small businesses; Castleton Avenue from Davis Avenue to Oakland Avenue and Henderson Avenue to Davis Avenue will serve as an outdoor art gallery with Jackelow’s portraits on display in each storefront.
Visitors are encouraged to wander from store to store to view the art and support local merchants. Fun family activities will be offered by store owners and the Castleton Avenue Merchants Organization (CAMO).
The 23 ink and watercolor paintings in the exhibit will be featured on a merchant map that serves as an exhibit program and store information guide. A Google map has also been developed for use on digital devices.
“My goal is to bring much needed pedestrian traffic to the area and create a positive, socially distant event that the whole community can benefit from,” said Jackelow. “As a resident of West Brighton for 25 years, I have a deep love for my community. It’s a diverse, vibrant and walkable neighborhood that feels like a small town in the middle of New York City.

LOCAL COMPANIES
Every store that has a painted display is a local business. “They all struggled during the pandemic, but they all came back despite the difficulties,” Jackelow added. “This show is a celebration of the determination and resilience of these small local traders, the backbone of our community. “
This Castleton Avenue art exhibit and shopping promenade is made possible by a DCA Premier grant from Staten Island Arts, with public funding from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs. It was also generously supported by local merchants and the Castleton Avenue Merchants Association led by Nina Flores and Priscilla Marco.
ABOUT WENDY BETH JACKELOW
Wendy Beth Jackelow, a medical and scientific illustrator by profession, began drawing and painting her neighborhood daily during the pandemic. As life slowly returned to her hometown of West Brighton after months of foreclosure, she began to create a series of store portraits in recognition of each business that has reopened.
The highlight of this work is the Paint the Town art exhibition and the merchant promenade. You can see his recent work on Instagram @wbjackelow_studios.
