In a two-week Spotlight Wall Show from June 25 to July 8, the Yaquina Art Association will present the photography of Sylvia Hosie. The Yaquina Art Association Gallery is located at Nye Beach in Newport at 789 NW Beach Drive. Hours of operation are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

Hosie, fine art photographer, showcases new work created over the past two years. Those years were unlike any in recent memory. In March 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic became real and lockdowns narrowed everyone’s horizons. For Hosie, that meant isolating himself from family and friends. Travel plans and photo trips could only be dreamed of.

Hosie soon realized she could “socially distance” herself from the local birds. “My longest lens, a Canon 100-400mm, would get me close enough to the bigger birds,” she said. “Around the same time, I started trying to create high-key images. On gray days, I could overexpose by two or three light stops. This technique minimized both sky and water. These birds on a white background have become a symbol of unlimited possibilities in a shrinking world. When the weather or the birds weren’t cooperating, I would turn to my photo archive and rework or reimagine the bird images there.

During this period, Hosie also began to explore ICM (intentional camera movement). By deliberately moving the camera with a slow shutter speed, a softer, smoother image is created. Some are very recognizable, like his series of waves, while others are abstractions.

Hosie has been a member of the Yaquina Art Association since 1984. She sells her work at the Yaquina Art Center on the bend in Nye Beach. There, people can find his photographic prints, cards, and coffee mugs. His work is also exhibited at Shilo Resort in Newport and Crow’s Nest in Toledo. His website is sylviahosiephotography.com
