Haunting of Potter’s Field Book and Art Exhibition | Culture & Leisure

This event will take place on October 8, 7-9 p.m., at the Winona County History Center.

In 2011, the Mississippi Theater, in collaboration with the Winona County Historical Society, produced a musical play by playwright and judge Margaret Shaw Johnson, entitled “The Haunting of Potter’s Field.” The work told for the most part true stories of people who were buried in Potter Field at Woodlawn Cemetery before 1940. There were worthy people who tried hard but were not destined to achieve the American Dream. “Their stories are so fascinating that I never managed to get them out of my mind,” Johnson says. So she decided to publish them in a book.

The book is richly illustrated by Jared Tuttle, of Minneapolis, Minn., Artist, illustrator, designer, and graduate of the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Framed enlargements of the illustrations will be on display in the Slaggie Family Lobby Gallery at the Winona County History Center from October 8 to November 14.

The launch of the book and the opening of the gallery are free and open to the public. We are planning light desserts, and as a special treat, the musicians will perform some of the original music composed for the 2011 theatrical production. Save this date. Registration is encouraged as places are limited. Call 507-454-2723 ext. 0.
