In 2022, for the first time, the Smithers Art Gallery (SAG) will pay exhibitors.
The announcement came as the gallery opened applications for the 2022 season, which will run from February through November.
In an Aug. 25 press release, SAG said it would pay the rates for the Representation of Canadian Artists / Front des Artistes Canadian (CARFAC).
“This allows us to fulfill our mandate of supporting local and regional artists in two main ways,” gallery director Nicole Chernish said in an email. “First, artists will be paid to exhibit their work, which takes the pressure off of having to sell, and second, artists can move forward with obtaining professional status from funders (BC Arts Council / Canada Council) once they receive two paid CARFAC exhibits. “
She added that this makes Smithers one of the few galleries in the North to pay CARFAC fees.
CARFAC is a national artists’ organization founded in 1968 in London, Ontario to demand recognition of the copyright of visual artists. His lobbying efforts made Canada the first country to pay exhibition fees and a 1988 amendment to federal law. Copyright law giving artists a legal right to exhibit and other rights.
The organization’s price list is based on the size of the site. For national exhibitions, there are three institutional categories, venues with a budget over $ 1 million (Category III), $ 500,000 to $ 1 million (Category II) and under $ 500,000 (Category I).
The 2022 minimum charge for a Category I gallery is $ 2,161 for a three-month solo exhibition. This is further reduced by 15% for a small space and SAG will be prorated by the number of weeks of exhibitions against the three month rate.
2022 exhibitors at Smithers will be paid $ 650 for the full gallery, $ 450 for the main gallery and $ 200 for the mini gallery.
“Group exhibitions are classified slightly differently depending on the number of artists. I believe the average rate is around $ 130 per artist, ”Chernish said.
She added that the gallery is doing it on purpose.
“According to CARFAC, we don’t need to pay royalties to artists as their work is also for sale in the gallery, but as an organization with a mandate to support local artists, we do our best to pay the rates. CARFAC to encourage and support artists.
SAG is seeking applications for individual exhibitions and joint / group thematic exhibitions. Exhibits will change every 4 to 5 weeks.
The gallery encourages submissions in all visual art mediums and installations.
The application package is now available on the gallery website to be picked up at the gallery. The deadline is Friday, October 29, 2021.
Applications will be submitted to a jury by an independent selection committee headed by the artistic director of SAG. Entries will be evaluated on the basis of artistic and creative excellence, originality, representation, cultural significance and impact of the work.
Artists will be informed of the outcome of their application by email by Friday, November 26.
